Instructions for setting up a home
computer to access
the Remote Web Workplace (aka RWW) for your office
- Initial note: You MUST perform the following instructions
using Internet Explorer 7.0. Other web browsers will not work with these instructions. Please contact Tech Support at 859-282-4030
for help with these instructions or if you want to use another
browser application
to access Remote Web Workplace and need assistance with setup. The
images depicted below are not going to be identical for your setup with
regards to the domain name and URLs provided, but the process will be
the same.
- Open
https://xyz.your-company.com/remote
in Internet Explorer. TSG usually makes RWW accessible on Microsoft
Small Business Server 2003 networks via a name like
https://private.technogrp.com
for example. If you can't figure out your companies access link contact
TSG Tech Support and they can provide the correct link info.
- Click on the
link.
- Click on the Certificate Error in the
address bar.

- Click on View Certificates
at the bottom of the box that appears.
- Click on the Install Certificate...
button.

- Click on
Next... button.
- Select the
radio button next to the 2nd line then click Browse.

- Select Trusted Root Certification Authorities and click
on OK.

- You may be prompted with the following warning. If so, click on
Yes.

- Click
Next... and Finish. buttons.
Click on the OK button.

- To verify the installation worked
close Internet Explorer and re-open it. Go to your companies RWW website
(e.g.
https://private.technogrp.com/remote) and
look for the lock symbol in the address bar.

-
Assuming you have the lock symbol in the address bar and are at the
correct address (make sure you have the https
and /remote) you should be looking at a
logon screen.

-
Type in your user name and password you use at your office to log on to
a PC with then click the Log On button. On rare occassions your
configuration may require you to logon using your "network domain
name\user name" rather than just your user name. If this appears to be
the case read the rest of this entry, otherwise skip on to #15. Note:
The internal domain name is NOT the same as the web address. To find the
domain name logon to a PC at your office and press CTRL-ALT-DELETE while
logged in. The first line of the resulting box should read "Your name is
logged on as domain name\username" This domain name\username is what you
want to use here. TSG Tech Support can provide this information for you
as well if you are unable to get this information.
-
You should now be looking at the following:

-
From here you can open up Outlook Web Access, learn how to setup your
home PC with a VPN connection (if your company uses or allows
such), or see about configuring Outlook on a home computer to access
your company email without using the web interface. You may also want to
look at the link for help with RWW. We're going to continue with
"Connect to my computer at work."
- Click on
the link to 'Connect to my computer at work' and you should see the
Security Toolbar appear telling you the Remote Desktop ActiveX Control
needs to be installed. (Note: If you get an error about security
settings see the troubleshooting tips
at the end of this page.)
-

- Click on the
security toolbar and select 'Install ActiveX Control...'
-
This will take you back to the main menu of RWW. Click on the 'Connect
to my computer at work' link again.
- You
should new get the following:

-
Click on 'Install'.
- After a minute you
should see the following:

-
Highlight the computer you want to remotely control and click on the
'Optional Settings' link.
-

-
If you want the remote session to automatically logon as the same user
you opened the RWW session with leave the first item checked (typically
the case). Checking item #2, 3 and 4 are pretty self explanatory, but be
aware while these will allow you to access the hard drive of your home
PC from the remote session allowing you to copy files back and forth or
print documents at home some corporate policies prohibit this so the
features may be disabled. Even if they are not disabled, corporate
policy may prohibit transferring files to outside computers so you
should check with your place of work if you are wanting to use this
feature and don't know if it's OK (think HIPAA or Sarbanes-Oxley).
-
Select the screen size here as well if you want the remote session to
run full screen or in a window.
- Congratulations! You're now setup to use
Remote Web Workplace.
Helpful tips:
-
In full screen mode the drop-down bar at the top of
the screen will auto-hide unless you click on the pushpin on the left
side of it, or vice versa will remain always visible if the pushpin is
turned in which case you can click on it to make it disappear.
-
The drop-down bar can be used to minimize a RWW
session allowing you to return to your local PC and then open the RWW
back up to full screen by clicking on it in your system tray. To
minimize it click on the underline in the right corner of the bar.
-
To close a session click on the X in the drop-down
bar. Keep in mind that this will leave you logged onto the PC you're
remotely controlling.
-
If you try to logon to a remote PC and receive a
message that someone else is logged on, it's generally a good idea not
to force them off. Doing so will close any open applications they may
have running and will not prompt to save their work.
Troubleshooting tips:
When trying to go through the initial setup you try to
install the ActiveX Control and the browser loops back saying it couldn't
install and takes you back to the logon prompt. The error message reads:
This error is a result of a disabled Microsoft Terminal
Service ActiveX control Add-On. To fix the problem:
- Within Internet Explorer, open Tools -
Internet Options - Programs tab - Select Manage
add-ons
- Highlight the Microsoft Terminal Service ActiveX
control, which will be set to disabled.
- Select Enabled - OK
- Restart Internet Explorer.
